LCSO’s new crime fighting weapon

CAPE CORAL, FL-The Lee County sheriff’s office has a new crime fighting weapon.
One they say will allow them to go places previously off limits, even to them.

Deputies say it’s the fastest law enforcement boat around and smugglers better beware.

Criminals can hide, but on the water, deputies say, they can’t run.
Deputy Chris Nyce says, “This boat is a smugglers nightmare, you know they’re already looking at it.”

Going 60 miles per hour, deputies say it’s the fastest law enforcement boat in Lee County, and turns on a dime, all things that are helpful when chasing traffickers, or during a search and rescue operation.

Sgt. Dan Keim says, “We’re able to access criminal data bases, to conduct investigations while we’re out in the field, we have our chart plotter, it helps us navigate, another feature we have is the infrared, basically it allows us to pick up heat signatures, especially at night, and if we have someone that might have fallen overboard.”

LCSO tells us the boat cost almost 250- thousand dollars, money that comes from taxpayers in four counties.

“We also have a gun compartment that we mount rifles.”

This boat can travel farther out than the rest of the fleet, 12 miles into the gulf.
So whether saving lives, or chasing bad guys, whatever the challenge, these guys say they’re ready.

Deputy Nyce says, “There’s really not a whole lot of smuggling vessel operators that are going to out maneuver us.”

Police (and reporter) train on high-powered rifles

PUNTA GORDA, Fla.– Punta Gorda police officers are adding patrol rifles to their crime-fighting arsenal.

Officers say they were out-gunned by criminals, so Monday, they started training with rifles.

“The key for us obtaining and deploying rifles in the field is it gives our officers long-range potential,” said Sgt. Rick Mohaupt. “They’re much more accurate.”

The department had previously relied on shotguns.

“With a shotgun you shoot nine pellets out of each shell. It’s not a long-range weapon,” says Sgt. Mohaupt. “With this, officers will have no problem shooting in excess of 200 to 300 yards.”

Police Chief Albert “Butch” Arenal says the priority is keeping the public secure, but officer safety is also top of mind.

“It’s important that we try to arm our officers, we try to give them the tools in the tool box to adequately defend themselves to meet a threat,” said Chief Arenal Monday.

The Chief thinks the switch is overdue.

“We’re one of the last agencies in Southwest Florida to do it. There’s not many that haven’t at this point. The bottom line is the shotgun is a little outdated considering a lot of the criminals on our streets are very well armed.”

?

Earlier this year, Punta Gorda police pulled over a car with a cache of high-powered weapons inside.

No one was hurt, but if the suspects had fired, officers say it could have been disastrous.

Boyfriend now behind bars in 15-year old girl’s shooting death

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- New developments in the shooting death of a Cape Coral teenager. 15-year old Ashlee Swazey’s boyfriend is now behind bars and facing charges of manslaughter.

Dylan Wisniewski is currently being held at the Lee County jail. Investigators say he pointed a rifle at his girlfriend, and pulled the trigger. Wisniewski claims he didn’t know the gun was loaded, that it was a prank gone terribly wrong.

“He’s a good kid. This kinda thing doesn’t happen to good kids. But I guess it does,” neighbor Cullen Lowe said Saturday.

Friends of Dylan Wisniewski are shocked, after a seemingly normal neighborhood was shattered in the pull of a trigger.

“About 12 cops, ambulance, you name it. We had everybody here,” neighbor Randy Ashby said.

Investigators swarmed Dylan’s home on Friday, after they say he shot his girlfriend Ashlee in the head with a .22-caliber rifle.

“He said it was an accident. I would take him at his word. If he said it was an accident, it probably was an accident,” Lowe said.

Even so, it’s an accident now landing the 18-year old behind bars. Dylan’s being charged with second-degree manslaughter, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. But those who knew Dylan and Ashlee say they were two teenagers in love. She’d ride her bike to the his house almost every day.

“She would come over, and they would spend the day together and in the evening he would go with her halfway home so that she would get home ok. You know, typical teenagers that like each other,” Lowe said.

Cape Coral Police Department continues to investigate the crime. In the meantime, grief counslers will be available next week at Ida Baker High School where Ashlee was a student, offering comfort to those devastated by a life ended tragically too soon.

“It’s sad. A little kid like that. I seen her, only on her bike,” Ashby said.

Wisniewski went before a judge for his first appearance early Saturday morning. He’s being held on no bond at this point in time.

Death Investigation in Fort Myers

Deputies have been at a home near the intersection of Moody and Pondella in Ft. Myers after they received a call from friends of a man asking for police to check his welfare.

Now police are swarming the area and the crime unit is taking video outside of his house. They are not saying if the death appears to be suspicious.

Friends tell us it’s an 83 year old man who was in great shape, and loved to fix up boats in his spare time.

WINK knows the mans name, but is not releasing it because police say his family has not been notified.
