Driver arrested for DUI after striking middle school student on Trafalgar Parkway

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Cape Coral Police arrested a parent for Driving Under the Influence yesterday evening after he hit a student walking along Trafalgar Parkway and then fled the area. James Alan Moses (DOB: 10/15/1965) was charged with DUI and Hit-and-Run when he returned to the area to see if he had struck a mailbox.

At 4:19 p.m. yesterday, Cape Police responded to a 911 call reporting that a child had been struck by the rear view mirror of a truck while walking from Challenger Middle School. According to witnesses, Moses was traveling eastbound on Trafalgar Parkway after picking up his child from the school. His truck drifted off the roadway and into the grass, and his passenger side mirror hit the head of an 11-year-old male. Moses left the scene and dropped his child at his residence. He then decided to come back to the scene to see if his truck had hit a mailbox. Cape Police Corporal Andy Satterlee located Moses when he returned and with the assistance of Corporal Patrick O’Grady, they determined that Moses was driving under the influence.

The 11-year-old was taken to Cape Coral Hospital and treated for a lump on his head. Moses was arrested and transported to Lee County Jail.

Cape Coral Police have stepped up their presence around school areas during the first week of classes. This added presence contributed to Cape Police finding and arresting the suspect in this hit-and-run accident within a short period of time.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: San Carlos Park fire destroys several office trailers

Video from NBC-2

Several vacant construction office trailers were lost to fire Tuesday night in San Carlos Park.

Flames were shooting 20 to 25 feet in the air when Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies and San Carlos Park Fire Rescue firefighters arrived at the construction site on James Whitehead Road north of Alico Road and east of U.S. 41 South. The flames were reaching higher than numerous mounds of rock and gravel spread throughout the property.

Dozens of office trailers were spread throughout the cleared areas of the property.

The call came in about 6 p.m. and within minutes, several of the trailers were on fire.

Low-water pressure sent firefighters into a defensive mode with the only fire hydrant being 1,000 feet away, said Estero Battalion Chief Dale Reisen. Fire trucks were hooking up to the hydrant to boost pressure in the 5-inch line leading to other trucks nearer the flames.

Firefighters worked to keep the fire from leaping to other trailers.

At least two ladder trucks were in use and additional fire units including Estero, Iona-McGregor, Bonita Springs and South Trail, were called to assist.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but there were multiple lightning strikes in the area during the time the fire started, Reisen said.

Lightning was still striking north and west of the area at 7 p.m.

Flames were still shooting from the structures at 7 p.m., but firefighters were keeping additional offices from catching. The offices were parked within feet of each other in long rows. At least eight to 10 of them appeared to be total losses.

Smoke was tracking east for at least a mile from the fire.

No other businesses, residences or wooded areas were in danger of catching fire.

A sign at the entrance to the construction area said AIM Surveying and Engineering. It was not clear if that business owned the trailers.

Pensacola Beach closed for oil

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – A popular section of Pensacola Beach has been closed because of oil that washed ashore there.

Government officials closed about a quarter-mile section of Casino Beach on Thursday. Thick pools of oil washed ashore there Wednesday. Workers ran yellow tape 75 yards back from the water.

Officials say the area was closed because heavy equipment is being brought in to clean up the mess.

Normally, there would have been hundreds of people on the sands and in the water but on Thursday only two sunbathers and a few people who had come to see the oil were in the area when the beach was closed.

The oil is from the Deepwater Horizon spill that has gushed millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico since April 20.
