Water flowing again at Fort Myers apartment complex

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Imagine being without water, and we’re not just talking the drinking kind, for nearly two days. That’s how some Fort Myers Apartment renters were living until WINK News showed up.

Ashley Florenzano has two kids who need to bathe and brush their teeth before bed, but for two nights in a row, those things couldn’t get done at her Forestwood Apartment home.

“Pretty desperate times over here without any water”, she tells us.

So Ashley called WINK News. She told us tenants were instructed to use the community bathrooms and she even spotted parents bathing their kids in the complex’s hot tub. When we went inside to check out the situation, we were treated to a surprise– the water was flowing again for the first time in days. It was sputtering at first, then, a steady stream. We called the management company to see what the problem was, but no one answered. We only heard a recording letting tenants know the water to the four affected buildings was back on. It’s still not clear why the water stopped flowing in the first place.

“We’ve heard several different stories that there was some sort of natural disaster, that rain cause some pipe to break”, Florenzano says.

But she still hasn’t heard anything for certain.

“I am still afraid and worried for the safety of myself, my family, my kids, the neighborhood, because to this moment, we haven’t gotten a letter, a notice, we don’t know if we have to boil this water.”

She was willing to risk it though. She told us she was planning on taking a shower as soon as we left her apartment.

Health Department says stay out of the water at some Southwest Florida beaches

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- It may be beautiful weather at the beach, but you may need to steer clear of the water in some areas this weekend.

The Charlotte County health department? is issuing a swimming advisory for a number of Southwest Florida beaches, after recent water samples revealed a dirty dilemma.

For James Williams and family, a vacation to enjoy Southwest Florida beaches isn’t quite panning out as planned. Swimming advisories are now in affect at a handful of Charlotte County beaches, thanks to unusually high levels of two different types of bacteria.

“It’s a shame for the kids, but if it happens, it happens,” Williams said Saturday.

The bacteria traces back to human and animal fecal matter. It’s washing up at beaches in Englewood, Palm Island, Port Charlotte and Boca Grande.

“I’ll go home and play with a hose before I get in there, you couldn’t pay me to get in there,” Williams said.

Health department officials say the surge in bacteria is likely linked to the recent heavy rainfall. Either way, many beach go-ers are being forced to take in the scene from a distance.

“I won’t even touch it, I won’t even walk my feet in there. I don’t want that stuff on me,” said Jeff Vincent, who was surprised by the signs during his visit to Port Charlotte beach on Saturday.

Still, some are ignoring the yellow warning signs lining the shore at Port Charlotte beach. They say they’re taking their chances, in an effort to cool off from the summer sun.

“Nine times out of ten, not everybody’s going to get sick from it. We just went in and had fun. Spent a few minutes in, few minutes out,” said Rllan Wood, who took to the water despite the warnings.

The health department says normally, Mother Nature clears up the problem within one to two weeks. In the meantime, some swimmers just learning of the advisory say they’re taking a break from the beach.

“That’s disgusting. Ok, I don’t think I’m going again then,” said Zach Davenport, after learning about the water sample results.

Floridians getting disconnected on state unemployment hotline

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Many Floridians are hoping to get a recently-approved benefits extension; but instead, they find themselves getting disconnected on the state’s unemployment hotline.

“It’s been about a week and I call every day and I cannot get through,” said Robert Reese.? He and his wife have been looking for work every day after they both lost their jobs in the past year. ?

His wife’s unemployment checks recently ran out, but they can’t get through to the state to get an extension.

“It says cannot take your call now because we have high call volume, try back later, and they end your call,” Reese said.

It’s not the first time the state hotline has been overwhelmed.? Cliff Gilman of Cape Coral ran into the same problem when he was laid off at the height of the construction industry decline in 2008.

“I just couldn’t get through, there would be too many calls going through,” Gilman said.

When his wife later lost her job too, he says they went online to apply for benefits.

“I think internet was the easiest, because they didn’t have the problem I had with the telephone,” Gilman said.

But Robert Reese says his internet messages aren’t getting a response right now either, with the high demand for the expanded benefits.? Now his family is running out of time.

“Things are getting really tight right now and I’m getting at the end of the rope,” Reese said.? “I don’t know where to go from here.”

In addition to the main claims hotline at 800-204-2418, the state of Florida also has these numbers for checking and filing unemployment claims: 866-778-7356 and 800-732-8204.? The state also operates Florida Unemployment Internet Direct Now at www.fluidnow.com and www.floridajobs.org.

New zoo exhibit may make your neck hurt

NAPLES, Fla. – “Giraffe are one of those animals we consider to be charismatic mega fauna,” David Tetzlaff with the Naples Zoo jokes.

It’s doubtful anyone getting a sneak peak of the animals Wednesday night will argue that.

Five male giraffes are the newest edition to the Naples Zoo family. It’s part of a $2 million expansion to open in 2012.

“They’re between 10 and 12 feet high, and weigh about 900 to 1,500 pounds. They’re really just youngsters,” Tetzlaff explains.

Eventually they will grow to be 18 feet tall.

So, how do you move five giants from as far away as California to Florida? It’s no easy feet.

Tetzlaff says there’s only about half a dozen people in the country that have giraffe trucks. “It’s a short unit so they can’t move back and forth. It’s very tall, about 13 feet tall, and fits under overpasses.”

The next tall order will be raising the money to make the giraffes’ permanent habitat, where people will actually be able to get a much more hands on experience.

“Our Coastal African region, it’ll be a whole new experience where you’ll be able to hand feed giraffe from a 10 foot deck.”

You can check our the giraffes starting this Saturday at the Naples Zoo.

Controversial plan to save tax money from land-buying program

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A top Lee Co. official is promoting a plan to suspend the Conservation 2020 tax collection for 2 years, and let property owners hold on to the money.

“This is a good program, but? a luxury in a recession.?? I also have a problem with taking all that land off the tax roll,” said Clerk of Courts Charlie Green.

The program collects tax from property owners, ever since voters approved Conservation 2020 in the mid-1990′s.?? It collects about 27 to 28 million dollars a year.?? The tax translates to 50 dollars a year for a home valued for taxes at 100-thousand.? It has bought and preserved about 22-thousand acres of land.

“We should leave that money in the hands of the taxpayer,” said Green.

Lee Co. homeowner Amber Fricke disagrees.? She says her family goes back 5 generations in Lee, and she loves the 2020 program.

“I consider this a sacred trust, an obligation that the county has to use the money to buy and preserve land!,” she told WINK News.?? “The voters approved it for one purpose only, and they should stick to that one purpose.”

Lee Commissioners will have the final say.? They will talk about the Green proposal during budget meetings in a few weeks.
