Man charged with firing gun during fight at Estero bar

Michael Dinesh Mariathasan, 22, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office

Michael Dinesh Mariathasan, 22, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

A witness who saw a man shoot a gun into the air early Thursday outside an Estero bar and grill followed a car until deputies arrived, resulting in the arrest of the man.

Michael D. Mariathasan, 22, of the 15000 block of Ocean Walk Way, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office report:

At 1:43 a.m. deputies were called to the 21000 block of Stoneybrook Golf Boulevard in Estero about shots being fired from a weapon. The people were gone.

Meantime a suspicious vehicle call came in at 2 a.m. Cory Healey, 24, said he had been at the bar and grill when a fight broke out. He saw a man pull a gun, fired bullets into the air and ran past Healey, getting into a tan Nissan Altima.

Healey followed the car and two other cars until they pulled into a gasoline station at Daniels Parkway and South Cleveland Avenue.

Two other witnesses, a boy, 156, and Nick Pemberton, 26, confirmed Healey’s account of events.

The deputy saw the car driving north and followed it into the gas station parking lot.

The driver and passengers were asked to get out of the car.

Two guns, one loaded with four live shells and two spent casings, were found in the car. A check showed at least one of the guns may have been stolen in May 2009 from a Lehigh Acres house.

All work and no pay for Punta Gorda man

PUNTA GORDA, Fla.– Record high unemployment rates have thousands of people looking for any job they can get.

But a Punta Gorda man says his new job turned into a nightmare.

Now, 20-year-old Shawn Dano is on the job hunt again.

“I’ve been looking for a job for eight months now,” Dano tells WINK News.

He thought he’d found a good gig after a Craigslist search turned up a job with a local Jani-King cleaning franchise.

“They said they’d give me a one day trial period,” Dano says. “That worked out, so I started working every single night.”

He spent nearly two months cleaning restaurants, but says he never saw a dime.

His paychecks from franchise owner Arlex Hernandez of Lehigh Acres bounced, and now he’s out of a job and $732.

We contacted the main Jani-King office in Fort Myers and spoke with the regional director.

He explained how the franchise structure works.

He says customers don’t pay the franchisee directly, but instead pay the regional office. The regional office in turn pays the franchisee. He says the responsibility of the franchisee is to comply with policy and procedure and part of that policy is paying employees.

The Jani-King regional office has suspended the agreement with that franchise.

The local Jani-King office says it has tried to rectify the situation, although it is up to the franchisee to make payments to workers. While WINK News was at their office, Jani-King employees tried getting in contact with the franchisee, but with no luck.

For now, Dano will keep looking for another job.

He’s hoping to find work soon to support his girlfriend and their baby before the holidays.

“I just want to spend some money for my son,” says Dano. “I just wish i could get paid.”

We made multiple phone calls to the franchise owner and they were not returned.

Dano, meanwhile, says he’s contacted his attorney and will continue to fight for his money.

VIDEO: More than 600 roosters seized in Lee cock-fighting bust, the largest in state history

Video from NBC-2

At least 600 roosters were seized earlier Tuesday at 17130 Kentara Way in Lee County, with two people in custody in the largest cockfighting ring in Lee County history – and possibly one of the biggest ever in Florida and the U.S.

Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Mike Shelly said an eight-month-long investigation ended with the arrests and seizure.

Authorities were removing the birds from the house in rural Lee, south of State Road 82 near Lehigh Acres and a few miles east of Southwest Florida International Airport. They were filling up a large truck with hundreds of cages containing the roosters.

One neighbor said she saw her neighbors at the Kentara Way home come and go but never suspected anything.

“Nobody gets in anyone’s business,” said Linda Head, who lives across the street on Kentara. “That’s why you live out here.”

She also said she never heard any roosters or chickens. She said she heard her neighbors’ Chihuahuas and children but no birds.

The roosters’ owners voluntarily relinquished them to Lee County Domestic Animal Services.

Another 52 birds were seized at 1530 Apollo, Fort Myers.

Deputies have reportedly seized about 1,000 roosters in what authorities say is a large-scale cock-fighting ring.

There are two scenes, one on Apollo Drive near Ortiz Avenue in Fort Myers and one on Kentara Way, south of SR-82 near Lehigh Acres.

Deputies have also set up an area at the sheriff’s office to handle the roosters with the help of the ASPCA and Lee County Animal Control. There has been one arrest so far, but deputies have not identified that person yet.
